1. What made you want to compete?
When I first got into fitness earlier this year, I simply wanted to transform my body and become a better, healthier version of myself. I adopted new clean eating habits and started getting back in the gym to get rid of the fat that had built up from years of poor eating and months of blowing off the gym. Only a couple weeks into my new lifestyle I decided I wanted to set a real goal for myself, one that I could strive for everyday, one that would give me something to really keep pushing myself for. I didn’t want to end up becoming unmotivated and reverting back to my old habits just because there was no real “end result” that I was working towards. Thanks to social media like Instagram and to the very many strong, empowering female fitness competitors that I was following, I decided that competing was what I wanted to do. Not only did I just want to do it, I knew I COULD do it; I could look like them, I could eat and train and be like them, it was just going to take 100% dedication, motivation, commitment, hard work, discipline…the list goes on and on. But I was ready for the challenge so I made the decision. I made the decision to really transform myself and my life and dedicate it all to my new goal of stepping on stage in a fitness competition.
2. What do you do to stay inspired?
I’m inspired daily by the people I surround myself with, especially my boyfriend and my amazing teammates and coach at Body Ambition Fitness. We have our own private Facebook page where we can all talk about anything and everything fitness-related, or just life in general. Some days we wake up feeling crappy and unmotivated and not feeling like going to the gym so we’ll post about it and the other girls will respond with uplifting words of encouragement to remind us of our goals and help us get back on our feet and push through it. Sometimes we post about all the crazy/silly comments we get from people that don’t understand our lifestyle. We post pictures of our gym selfies, of our food, share recipes, ask for advice, etc. Whatever the case may be, I can always depend on my team and my amazingly inspiring coach, WBFF Pro Janelle Nicolo. Without this support system, my fitness journey would not be the same…and certainly not as fun!
3. What shows have you already been in or plan to be in in the future?
This will be my first show and I can’t even believe how excited I am for it! As for the future, you’ll definitely be seeing me again at more WBFF shows, and maybe even Worlds one day 🙂
4. Who got you started?
There’s nobody that can get you started but yourself. You need to want it, you need to be ready to commit yourself to your goals and be ready to make the sacrifices and give it your all. So who got me started? Myself.
5. Who do you look to for help now?
My coach, Janelle Nicolo. She’s been in the fitness industry and competing for almost a decade now and not only does she have all that experience, but she has the knowledge and training and personality to back it up. She has a team of over 100 clients that she balances on top of her own training but that doesn’t hinder her or our performances. She’s always willing to help us in any way possible so we can achieve our full potential. She’s Superwoman.
6. Where do you usually workout?
I work out regularly at my local gym, Best Fitness but try to get to BA every couple weeks to get in a nice butt-kicking from coachy!
7. Do you use any suppliments? If so, what ones (brands, names, etc)
Right now I use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard whey protein powder and IMSOALPHA pre-workout and BCAAs.
8. What are your most noticeable results?
9. Has fitness changed your life? If so, how?
ABSOLUTELY! I’m so much healthier and happier now. I only eat clean, natural, organic foods and it has made my body so much happier with me. I love what I see when I look in the mirror and I love the work ethic I’ve developed through this journey. I’m much stronger physically and mentally and have adopted a new outlook on life. I love sharing my progress with the world in hopes of inspiring others to embark on their own lifechanging journey. It’s so rewarding when people reach out to tell me that my IG/FB posts motivated them to get to the gym or start eating healthier or whatever the case may be. Living a healthy and fit lifestyle kind of makes us one big family…a fitfam as we like to call it! We build each other up in a world where so many people are more focused on putting others down.
10. What personal fitness goals have you set for yourself?
My ultimate goal is to win my WBFF Pro Card, whether it be at this 2014 New England show or a future one. Yup, I know this is only my first competition but I reach for the stars!
11. Describe your diet.
My diet is a very natural and organic one. I eat only lean protein like eggwhites, chicken, turkey, and white fish, with starchy carbs like sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa, pumpkin, Ezekial bread. I include a couple servings of fruit each day and have LOADS of veggies! My coach has taught us to focus more on the ingredients and types of foods that we’re putting into our bodies rather than just eating to fit macros.
12. What does your workout schedule look like?
I workout 6 days a week training each body part only once and have one complete rest day. I do cardio 5x a week and love to add in some HIIT whenever I can. I always push myself to train harder and stronger than yesterday.
13. What do you do for a living?
I’m a Sales & Office Administrator at a bioplastics company.
14. What are your personal non-fitness goals?
My only personal goal in life is to be happy and do what I love with the people that I love.
15. Have you participated in any other sports?
I played ice hockey for about 15 years.
16. Here you can mention your family/thank you’s.
I want to thank my family for believing in me and for supporting my goals; my boyfriend for being there every step of the way to push and motivate me and help me stay on track to becoming the best I can be, and for making sacrifices in his own life so that I can achieve my dreams.
17. Do you have any hobbies?
When I’m not working or training (…or eating or meal prepping…) I just like to spend some time relaxing with my boyfriend and our fur baby 🙂
18. What are challenges that you face that may keep you from reaching your fitness goals?
Injuries of course. I actually just pulled my hip flexor last week and I was so bummed about it and concerned about it causing setbacks but I know that if I take care of it and listen to my doctor and my coach, everything will work itself out. I just have to be on point with everything else to make sure those setbacks never actually occur.
19. What obstacles have you overcome to be where you are?
Obstacles? None really. Besides the temptations from food every day….
