One of the most important aspects of proper preparation in training for boxing is wrapping your hands correctly.

There are many styles of boxing hand wraps, materials, length and methods.

First, it’s important to use boxing wraps that are the correct size for you.

Secondly, you want your boxing hand wraps to fit your hand and feel the most comfortable.

Lastly, you need to practice the proper way to wrap your hands, that provides you the best security and the most protection from injury.

The length of any given style of hand wrap can vary from 108”-180”. The smallest sizes are better suited to pre-teens and lighter-weight fighters. You don’t want too much extra wrap, because that might prevent you from being able to fully close your fist. The ideal for most boxers over 125lbs is in the 180” range because the added length is needed to secure the wrist, protect the joints and provide proper protection for the knuckles.

Traditional boxing hand wraps are constructed of woven cotton that provides comfort and a consistent wrap. Semi-elastic boxing wraps are typically a cotton/polyester blend that slightly stretches. This allows the material to contour better around your wrist, fingers and knuckles. It is easier to wrap your hands too tight with this type of material, but also provides a more form-fitting boxing hand wrap.

When it comes to how you wrap your hands, there are many tutorials and instructional videos. There are also many variations and approaches, so it’s important to try a few different methods until you determine the approach that works best for you.

In many cases how you approach your boxing wraps all comes down to personal preference, but if you adhere to the three aspects to consider, proper length, materials, and the correct method, you can protect your hands like a seasoned pro.
